Getting Started with Cardano

I am trying to get started with Cardano. This is a rough log of my adventure and the path I've taken to get started.

I want to put my spare compute to use to earn Cardano. What do I need to do?
It looks like I need to create a public stake pool to really earn. According to this page, I have to first learn how to set up, run, and maintain a Cardano node for 24/7 uptime.
